In our class, we are ALL about rhyming words and today was the best day to find as many as we could. We started off the day talking about one student's baby sister, who was born on Leap Day and happens to have a name that rhymes with another student in the class. They thought this was "good fun that was funny".
We are on fitness week, and today was all about kicking a ball. There was a little mini book in today's lesson called "Do or Don't Kick". In keeping with the silly rhyming theme, I challenged them to think of a word that rhymed with kick, but was a more appropriate action with the strawberry and the chicken. They came up with "lick" and "pick" for the strawberry. Nobody could think of a rhyming word that went with chicken, so I asked them what would be a kind thing to do with/for the chicken, and the most popular answer was "sing". After we read The Cat In The Hat, the class decided was a much safer idea to kick a ball than to try to stand on it, as the cat in the story did. Good thinking on their part!
For small groups, they wanted to play the word family game from yesterday's lesson again. I also pulled out additional letter cubes and word cards from previous themes that related to our Dr. Seuss Day activities. Some students used the letter cubes to make new words. Others practiced writing the alphabet and drawing pictures of words from the book or various word family cards.
The fine motor center was a self-directed lacing activity with a variety of (mostly red) beads. Most of the children made up patterns with various shapes/colors/fruit beads, but some used the letter beads to build words on their string.
We "capped" off the celebration by making silly Seuss hats with paper bags and wearing them while reading our favorite stories.
